由英国的生物学家理查德·道金斯在1976造出，用于其著作《自私的基因》。mimeme的缩略（对比英语 phoneme），源自古希腊语 μῖμος (mîmos, “复制，模仿”)。^[1]。其网路含义由迈克·戈德温应用。^[2]
