由英國的生物學家理查德·道金斯在1976造出，用於其著作《自私的基因》。mimeme的縮略（對比英語 phoneme），源自古希臘語 μῖμος (mîmos, “複製，模仿”)。^[1]。其網路含義由迈克·戈德温應用。^[2]
