源自古希臘語 δέκα ‎(déka, "10") + ὀκτώ ‎(oktṓ, "8")。

有一則古希臘神話，說的是古代有1位窮苦的女僕，她辛勞工作一整年也只能掙到18塊硬幣。因此她日復一日地祈求上蒼解脫她的不幸命運。神仙後來被她感動，將她變成了一隻鴿子。灰斑鳩是鴿子的一種，它的叫聲有時也像古希臘語「18」的讀音，故根據此典故為之命名。^[1]^[2]
