有一则古希腊神话，说的是古代有1位穷苦的女仆，她辛劳工作一整年也只能挣到18块硬币。因此她日复一日地祈求上苍解脱她的不幸命运。神仙后来被她感动，将她变成了一只鸽子。灰斑鸠是鸽子的一种，它的叫声有时也像古希腊语“18”的读音，故根据此典故为之命名。[1][2]
