由托马斯·亨利·赫胥黎在1870年造出。源自古希腊语 ἄγνωστος (ágnōstos, “无知的，不知道的”)，或源自a- + Gnostic，派生自古希腊语 ἀ- (a-, “不”) + γιγνώσκω (gignṓskō, “知道”)。
