由托馬斯·亨利·赫胥黎在1870年造出。源自古希臘語 ἄγνωστος (ágnōstos, “無知的，不知道的”)，或源自Lua错误 在Module:Affix的第887行：attempt to concatenate global 'pos' (a nil value)，派生自古希臘語 ἀ- (a-, “不”) + γιγνώσκω (gignṓskō, “知道”)。
