17世紀，詞源不詳，但可能源自transmigure、transmigrate。但還可能派生自maugre，因此一開始可能指「凶眼」，但受到了上一個詞源的影響，其詞義變換為「變形」。還有一種可能性是transfigure和modify的合併。
