• de Vaan 认为源自*solh₂- (“整个的，健康的”)，类似sollus、salvus。

• 也有人认为与原始日耳曼语 *sēliz（哥特语 𐍃𐌴𐌻𐍃 (sēls, “好的，快乐的”)、古英语 sēlra (“更好的”)）有关，源自原始印欧语 *sōlh₂-（参见sōlor (“安慰”)）。
