源自中古英语 lithen，源自古英语 līþan (“走，旅行，航行，失去”)，源自原始日耳曼语 *līþaną (“走，离开，遭受”)，源自原始印欧语 *leyt- (“走，启程，死”)。与北弗里斯兰语 lyen、lije (“遭受”)、荷兰语 lijden (“遭受，忍耐，停留”)、德语 leiden (“遭受，忍受，允许”)同源。参见lode、lead。
