晚期中古英语，源自低地德语 fommeln或者荷兰语 fommelen。[1]
或者可能源自某斯堪的纳维亚/北日耳曼语支语言，对比古诺尔斯语 fálma、瑞典语 fumla、丹麦语 fumle、德语 fummeln。
两者最终可能都是表示这一动作的拟声词。[2]或者，源自原始印欧语 *pal- (“摇”)，参见拉丁语 palpo (“轻触”)，及原始西日耳曼语 *fōlijan (“感受”)。[3]
