[编辑]源自中古英語 nymyl、nemel、nemyll、nymell (“敏捷的,迅捷的;准备就绪的;有能的”),古英語 nǣmel (“善于学习的”)和古英語 numol (“能够拿稳的”)的合并形式,两者均源自niman (“拿,取”) + -el、-ol (联想后缀),等价于nim + -le。对比德語 nehmen、哥特語 𐌽𐌹𐌼𐌰𐌽 (niman)、古諾爾斯語 nema (“拿”)。详见nim。
