源自中古英語 epiphanie，源自古法語 epyphanie，源自晚期拉丁語 epiphania，源自古希臘語 ἐπιφάνεια (epipháneia, “展示，突现”)，源自ἐπιφαίνω (epiphaínō, “出现，展示”)，源自ἐπί (epí, “之上”) + φαίνω (phaínō, “发光；出现”)。英语中Epiphany（基督教用法）自14世纪起有使用，一般用法出现于17世纪。
