不確定。以線形文字B書寫的邁錫尼希臘語文本中出現了名字𐀀𐀑𐀩𐀄 (a-ki-re-u)[1](主格)/ 𐀀𐀑𐀩𐀸 (a-ki-re-we)[2](與格),一般認為和本詞是同一個名字。[3]
古今皆有人推測與ἄχος (ákhos, 「痛苦;悲傷」)和λαός (laós, 「人」)有關,因為阿喀琉斯給人們帶來的悲傷是《伊利亞特》的中心主題。[4][5][6]
