不确定。以线形文字B书写的迈锡尼希腊语文本中出现了名字𐀀𐀑𐀩𐀄 (a-ki-re-u)[1](主格)/ 𐀀𐀑𐀩𐀸 (a-ki-re-we)[2](与格),一般认为和本词是同一个名字。[3]
古今皆有人推测与ἄχος (ákhos, “痛苦;悲伤”)和λαός (laós, “人”)有关,因为阿喀琉斯给人们带来的悲伤是《伊利亚特》的中心主题。[4][5][6]
