Shorto (2006) 将此词追溯到原始孟-高棉语 *tn(oo)t ~ tnu(u)t (“糖棕，糖椰”)，尽管他提出此词可能从克木语借入，透过比较 thốt 和 tŭt (Thin)、tu:t (“植物、树、树干、茎”) (Yuan)。其他同源词包括高棉语 ត្នោត (tnaot)，和中墨侬语 tɒ:m no:t。[1]

语丛破坏机制（cluster-breaking mechanism）－例如 thằn lằn (“蜥蜴”) 和 trăn (“蟒蛇”)[2]（继承自原始越语 *k-lən，继承自原始孟-高棉语 *t₁lan (“蟒蛇”)）－也可能破坏了原始形式的 *tn- 语丛得到thốt nốt。
