詞源[编辑]

Shorto (2006) 將此詞追溯到原始孟-高棉語 *tn(oo)t ~ tnu(u)t (“糖棕，糖椰”)，儘管他提出此詞可能從克木語借入，透過比較 thốt 和 tŭt (Thin)、tu:t (“植物、樹、樹幹、莖”) (Yuan)。其他同源詞包括高棉語 ត្នោត (tnaot)，和中墨儂語 tɒ:m no:t。[1]

語叢破壞機制（cluster-breaking mechanism）－例如 thằn lằn (“蜥蜴”) 和 trăn (“蟒蛇”)[2]（繼承自原始越語 *k-lən，繼承自原始孟-高棉語 *t₁lan (“蟒蛇”)）－也可能破壞了原始形式的 *tn- 語叢得到thốt nốt。
