来自古希腊语 καλός (kalós, 美丽) + εἶδος (eîdos, 形状)(对照-oid) +‎ -scope。1817年由发明家大卫·布儒斯特所创。[1]

用作比喻义则是1819年的拜伦勋爵从出版社那边收到一个万花筒而来。[1]
