來自古希臘語 καλός (kalós, 美麗) + εἶδος (eîdos, 形狀)(對照-oid) +‎ -scope。1817年由發明家大卫·布儒斯特所創。[1]

用作比喻義則是1819年的拜伦勋爵從出版社那邊收到一個萬花筒而來。[1]
