继承自阿拉伯语 اَللّٰه (allāh, “主”)，其方言形式 alla 丢失了词尾的 -h。尽管现代马尔他人主要是穆斯林的后裔，但这个阿拉伯语词也被讲阿拉伯语的犹太人和基督徒使用，用以指称“上帝”（事实上，此词甚至在伊斯兰教本身出现之前就已经被使用了）。
