源自古低地蘇格蘭語 speill (“攀爬”)，來不明。類似古低地蘇格蘭語 spelare (“翻跟斗的雜技演員”)。可能源自中古荷蘭語 spelen (“玩，走鋼絲，耍雜技，表演”)，參見spiel。或源自古英語 spilian (“玩”)。
