[编辑]源自中古英語 salarie,源自盎格魯-諾曼語 salarie,源自古法語 salaire,源自拉丁語 salārium (“薪水”),形容词salārius (“盐的”)的中性形式,源自sal (“salt”)。有很多人尝试解释为什么拉丁语中“薪水”一词派生自表示“盐的”的形容词。多数人认为salārium实为salārium argentum (“盐钱”)的缩写,但是这个短语不可考。比较流行的理论认为短语指“盐构成的钱”,因为据说古罗马的士兵的军饷是用盐来支付的,但是在古籍中并没有任何证据支持这种说法。还有理论认为它指“用来买盐等日用品的钱”。[1]
