古舊用法:源自中古英語 orguile古法語 orgueil [1]通俗拉丁語 *orgōllia, *orgōlla古法蘭克語 *orgōllja原始日耳曼語 *uzgōljō(對比古英語 orgol, orgel。參見or- + *gōl (炫耀,誇耀;氣派,顯赫) / gale ())。與古高地德語 urguol, urguoli, urgilo, 西班牙語 orgullo同源。現代用法多是借自法語 orgueil[2]
