源自中古英語 giltgult,源自古英語 gylt (罪;犯罪;错误,罪过),其词源不详,但可能与古英語 ġieldan (付,惩罚)有关,其派生出yield。更具体地,其可能与原始西日耳曼語 *guldijā有关联,该词派生出中古低地德語 gülde中古高地德語 gülte (债,费用)。然而,古英语词干或-t(而非-d)不符合欧洲的词形。
