[编辑]源自中古英語 gilt、gult，源自古英語 gylt (“罪；犯罪；错误，罪过”)，其词源不详，但可能与古英語 ġieldan (“付，惩罚”)有关，其派生出yield。更具体地，其可能与原始西日耳曼語 *guldijā有关联，该词派生出中古低地德語 gülde、中古高地德語 gülte (“债，费用”)。然而，古英语词干或-t（而非-d）不符合欧洲的词形。
