约17世纪，源自中古法語 decrier (“诋毁；使...贬值”)，源自古法語 descrier (“喊叫”)（现代作décrier）。descry 的同源對似詞。贬义的含义在中古英语借用时尚不存在，但它在法语中至少从13世纪起就已经出现，具有“诋毁；贬值；宣布货币贬值或废止”的含义，可能是因为将前缀“de-”解释成了“向下，劣等”之意的缘故。
