源自中古英語 cenyth，源自中世紀拉丁語 cenit，源自阿拉伯語 سَمْت (samt, 「方向，小路」)，源自完整形式سَمْت اَلرَّأْس (samt ar-raʔs, 「頭的朝向」)。以-ni-代-m-的情況有時被認為是誤讀了三個筆畫。這個說法確實有道理，但是也可能只是發音模仿導致的。
