源自中古英語 cenyth，源自中世紀拉丁語 cenit，源自阿拉伯語 سَمْت (samt, “方向，小路”)，源自完整形式سَمْت اَلرَّأْس (samt ar-raʔs, “头的朝向”)。以-ni-代-m-的情况有时被认为是误读了三个笔画。这个说法确实有道理，但是也可能只是发音模仿导致的。
