約1300年，中古英語 schrewed (「墮落的，邪惡的」, 字面意思是「受詛咒的」)，源自schrewen (「詛咒」)，源自schrewe、schrowe、screwe (「邪惡的人或物」)，源自古英語 scrēawa (「邪惡的人」, 字面意思是「咬人的人或物」)。等價於shrew + -ed。還見shrew
「精明」一意出現於16世紀初葉，在17世紀前逐漸得到正面意。
