約1300年,中古英語 schrewed (墮落的,邪惡的, 字面意思是受詛咒的),源自schrewen (詛咒),源自schreweschrowescrewe (邪惡的人或物),源自古英語 scrēawa (邪惡的人, 字面意思是咬人的人或物)。等價於shrew +‎ -ed。還見shrew

「精明」一意出現於16世紀初葉,在17世紀前逐漸得到正面意。
