约1300年,中古英語 schrewed (堕落的,邪恶的, 字面意思是受诅咒的),源自schrewen (诅咒),源自schreweschrowescrewe (邪恶的人或物),源自古英語 scrēawa (邪恶的人, 字面意思是咬人的人或物)。等价于shrew +‎ -ed。还见shrew

“精明”一意出现于16世纪初叶,在17世纪前逐渐得到正面意。
