源自古法語 mathematique，源自拉丁語 mathēmatica (「數學」)，源自古希臘語 μαθηματικός (mathēmatikós, 「關於所學之事物」)，源自μάθημα (máthēma, 「知識，學問，學習」)。代替了原來的古英語 rīmcræft。
