原為兩個詞，源自古英語 on (介詞，等同於a) sundran (「分開的位置」)，源自原始日耳曼語 *sunder、*sundraz。同源詞包括丹麥語 sønder、瑞典語 sönder、荷蘭語 zonder、德語 sonder、冰島語 sundur、法羅語 sundur和挪威語 sunder/sønder，與哥特語 𐍃𐌿𐌽𐌳𐍂𐍉 (sundrō)有關。
