在英语中，大多数的普通名词前面可加不定冠词，但也有例外（如一般不说“there is a molybdenum on earth”，而是说“there is molybdenum on earth”），许多普通名词首字母不大写，也有首字母大写的情况（如Frenchman）。首字母是否大写不是区分普通名词和专有名词的依据。
