在英語中，大多數的普通名詞前面可加不定冠詞，但也有例外（如一般不說“there is a molybdenum on earth”，而是說“there is molybdenum on earth”），許多普通名詞首字母不大寫，也有首字母大寫的情況（如Frenchman）。首字母是否大寫不是區分普通名詞和專有名詞的依據。
