根据牛津大学出版社美国词典负责人凯瑟琳・马丁（Katherine Martin）的研究，“you only live once（你只能活一次）”这个短语（不是缩写）可以追溯到19世纪。[1]从1940年到2000年，它的使用率稳步上升。[1] 词汇学家本・齐默（Ben Zimmer）发现这个缩写的最早用法是1993年，在YOLO装备的商标申请中，用小字写著“you only live once（你只能活一次）”。[1] 这个缩写在2011年左右由加拿大饶舌歌手德雷克推广开来。[1][2]

YOLO在2016年作为一个词被收入《牛津英语词典》中。[3]
