根据牛津大学出版社美国词典负责人凯瑟琳・马丁(Katherine Martin)的研究,“you only live once(你只能活一次)”这个短语(不是缩写)可以追溯到19世纪。[1]从1940年到2000年,它的使用率稳步上升。[1] 词汇学家本・齐默(Ben Zimmer)发现这个缩写的最早用法是1993年,在YOLO装备的商标申请中,用小字写著“you only live once(你只能活一次)”。[1] 这个缩写在2011年左右由加拿大饶舌歌手德雷克推广开来。[1][2]

YOLO在2016年作为一个词被收入《牛津英语词典》中。[3]
