根據牛津大學出版社美國詞典負責人凱瑟琳・馬丁(Katherine Martin)的研究,「you only live once(你只能活一次)」這個短語(不是縮寫)可以追溯到19世紀。[1]從1940年到2000年,它的使用率穩步上升。[1] 詞彙學家本・齊默(Ben Zimmer)發現這個縮寫的最早用法是1993年,在YOLO裝備的商標申請中,用小字寫著「you only live once(你只能活一次)」。[1] 這個縮寫在2011年左右由加拿大饒舌歌手德雷克推廣開來。[1][2]

YOLO在2016年作為一個詞被收入《牛津英語詞典》中。[3]
