詞源

根據牛津大學出版社美國詞典負責人凱瑟琳・馬丁（Katherine Martin）的研究，「you only live once（你只能活一次）」這個短語（不是縮寫）可以追溯到19世紀。^[1]從1940年到2000年，它的使用率穩步上升。^[1] 詞彙學家本・齊默（Ben Zimmer）發現這個縮寫的最早用法是1993年，在YOLO裝備的商標申請中，用小字寫著「you only live once（你只能活一次）」。^[1] 這個縮寫在2011年左右由加拿大饒舌歌手德雷克推廣開來。^[1]^[2]
