源自中古英語 sulen、sulien (“變髒；弄髒，弄污”)，源自古英語 sylian (“弄髒，弄污”)[1]，源自原始日耳曼語 *suliwōną、*sulwōną、*sulwijaną (“弄髒，弄污”)，源自原始印歐語 *sūl- (“粘稠的液體，淤泥”)，可能與來自相同日耳曼語族源頭的古法語 souillier (“弄髒，弄污”)（現代法語 souiller）部分混合。與丹麥語 søle (“弄髒，弄污”)、荷蘭語 zaluwen (“弄髒，弄污”)（中古荷蘭語 saluwen (“弄髒，弄污”)）、德語 sühlen (“弄髒，弄污”)、古撒克遜語 sulian (“弄髒，弄污”)、瑞典語 söla (“弄髒，弄污”)同源。亦对比中古英語 sulpen (“弄髒，弄污”)[2]、古英語 solian (“弄髒，弄污；變髒”)，參見 soil。
