可能基于smiddum、smeddum (“细粉末”)的变体，受到了低地蘇格蘭語 smitch (“污渍；小点，污点；一点，一丝”)的影响。[1][2]另，源自*smitching，smitch的指小形式。对比诺森布里亚方言英语smiddum (“铅矿的细小颗粒”)。[3] 低地蘇格蘭語 smitch（亦作smutch），可能派生自英语方言词smit、smite (“一点，一丝”)、古英語 smytta、smitta (“污渍、斑点、污点”)，与古英語 smītan (“涂抹，弄脏”)有关；或者可能源自*smuddian, *smyddan, *smydecian, *smydegian (“弄脏，玷污”)，可能与中古低地德語 smudde (“肮脏的”)、smudden (“弄脏，玷污”)、中古高地德語 smotzen (“肮脏”)有关。若如此，则与smudge同源。
其他词源理论认为smidgeon与蘇格蘭蓋爾語 smidin (“小音节”)有关，但考虑到这样所必需的语义变迁，可能性极低。

一些烹饪书、厨房量具生产商曾试图针对菜谱具体定义smidgen的量。此类定义一般落在一茶匙的1⁄25和1⁄48之间。可能最常用的是1⁄32。其他对微量的量词包括tad、dash、pinch和drop。一般普遍认为这类词中最大的是tad，而smidge大于drop而小于pinch。
