源自 níchʼi (“吹氣”, 完整體) + -ł- (分類綴)，源自 -chʼi (描述氣流運動的完成體動詞詞幹)，源自原始德內語 *tšʼʷəy ~ *tšʼʷi，源自Pre-原始德內語 *kʼʷəy (“風在吹”)。氣流被認為是一種運動的東西，標記它到達的完整體詞形相當於英語現在進行時的“it is blowing”。
