源自原始意大利語 *kastrom，源自原始印歐語 *ḱes- (“切開。分開”) (Watkins, 1969)。較舊的詞源 (1899) 認為派生自 casa，並提出一源自梵語“詞根”的源頭 *skad-（“覆蓋”）。如果直接源自原始印歐語 *ḱ(e)stróm，則與梵語 शस्त्र (śastrám-, śástram-, “切割工具，刀，武器”)同源。參見 castrō、careō。
