源自英国作家詹姆斯·希尔顿(1900–1954)在1933年所著《消失的地平线》内的虚构地名，参见下方引文。有提出了藏語词源，源自ཞང (zhang, 卫藏地区一个地名) +‎ རི (ri, “山”) +‎ ལ (la, “关卡”)。
