繼承中古英語 fesauntfesant,來自古法語 fesan,來自拉丁語 phāsiānus,來自古希臘語 φᾱσιανός (phāsianós),意思是 「Φᾶσις (Phâsis) 河的[鳥]」,據推測,鳥從那裡向西傳播。取代本土的古英語 wōrhanamōrhana的變體。參見moorhen
