缩写自 gooney，源于已废弃的 gony (“笨蛋”)（约使用于1580年），语源不详。可能是一个源自中古英语 gone（gome (“男人、人”) 的变体）的亲昵称呼。“Gony”曾被水手用来指代信天翁及类似的大型、笨拙的鸟类（约1839年）。goon 被当作“愚蠢的人”的用法最早出现在1921年左右。比较 低地苏格兰语 goni、guni (“恶鬼、妖怪”)，以及瑞典语方言 gonnar (“小精灵、地精”，复数)。
- 詞義1（“雇佣打手”；约1938年）很大程度上受到《大力水手》系列漫画角色艾丽丝的影响。
- 詞義3（“傻瓜”）则因斯派克·米利根与彼得·塞勒斯主演的热门广播节目《呆子秀》而得到强化。
