                繼承中世紀西班牙語 res,源自 拉丁語 rēs (事物,財產)主格。和阿拉貢語阿斯圖里亞斯語加泰羅尼亞語加利西亞語 res葡萄牙語 rês 同源。

                幾乎所有詞典都一致認為該詞派生自 阿拉伯語 رَأْس (raʔs也指牲畜),在語義上完全脗合,但在語音上並不成立:羅曼語系形式中的前元音不支持其源自阿拉伯語,因為各方言通常在該詞中保留後元音 -a-(對照馬爾他語 ras,而非 *ries)。[1]
