源自古法語 apotecaire，源自中世紀拉丁語 apothecarius (“店主”)，源自apotheca (“商店”)，早期形式拉丁語 apotheca (“仓库”)，源自古希臘語 ἀποθήκη (apothḗkē, “仓库”)，源自ἀπό (apó, “出，离”) + τίθημι (títhēmi, “放置”)，即“用来把东西放起来的地方”。boutique and bodega的同源對似詞。
