源自中古英語 adamant、adamaunt，源自拉丁語 adamantem，adamās (“金剛石”)的賓格單數形式，源自古希臘語 ἀδάμας (adámas，“不可征服的”)，源自 ἀ- (a-，“不”) + δαμάζω (damázō，“我馴服”)，或是閃米特語起源。英語 diamond 的同源對似詞。
