源自中古英语 musik、musike,借自盎格鲁-诺曼语 musik、musike、古法语 musique,及它们的来源拉丁语 mūsica,源自古希腊语 μουσική (mousikḗ),源自古希腊语 Μοῦσα (Moûsa, “缪斯”),古希腊的艺术女神。词形分析作muse + -ic (“与...有关的”)。取代了日耳曼语系本土词古英语 drēam,其与英语 dream同源。
