借自新拉丁语 academia，派生自古希腊语 Ἀκαδημία (Akadēmía)；academy的同源对似词。Academe 是古雅典附近的花园或树林的名称，柏拉图曾在此讲学；据说以其前主人阿卡德摩斯（Ἀκάδημος／Ἑκάδημος，希腊神话中一位阿提卡英雄）命名。
