- 一些非洲裔曾尝试为这个词辩白（特别是本变体形式nigga及其变体niggah），但是惹起了争议，一些人认为由于其历史阴暗，加之现在仍有贬义使用，这个词不能够被辩白。 详见nigger。
- 本词的部分变体已经使用良久，包括niggah和nigguh，它们的复数仅用-s后缀（如niggahs等），但现在还常（非正式地）使用视觉方言词尾-z（niggahz）。近来，nikka和nikkah 等拼写也开始出现于非正式对话和嘻哈中。有时候，尤其是20世纪中叶的书面记录中，nigguh常作nigger的南部白人发音的视觉方言形式，而nigga(h)则是代表非洲裔美国人发音的视觉拼写形式。
- 在无r音英语变体（如多数英国英语口音）中，本词无法与nigger区分开来。
