English: A GIF animation created from footage taken from a newsreel documenting the public book burning orchestrated by the Nazi Party (NSDAP) and the German Student Union (German: Deutsche Studentenschaft, DSt). The event was held as a propagandistic spectacle at Berliner Opernplatz (now Bebelsplatz), the Opera Square in Berlin, Germany, on May 10, 1933.
As part of the nationwide campaign "Action against un-German Spirit," (Aktion wider den undeutschen Geist), students broke into and occupied the Institute for Sexual Research (Magnus Hirschfeld's Institut für Sexualwissenschaft) and burned its entire library, along with thousands of other “un-German” books. Uncredited (unidentified, unknown or anonymous) photographer. No known copyright restrictions. |
