詞源[編輯]
源自中古英語 Temese,源自古英語 Temes、Temese(對比威爾士語 Tafwys),源自拉丁語 Tamesis、Tamesas[1]。帶 h 的異體拼寫起於中古英語,是受詞源來自希臘語的錯誤認識所影響。[2]
拉丁語名稱來自原始凱爾特語 *tamesās (「河,水流」, 字面意思是「黑暗」),*tames 的陽性 ā-詞幹形式[3],源自原始印歐語 *tm̥Hes-,*témHes-、*témHos- (「黑暗」) 的零階形式,來自詞根 *temH- (「黑暗的」) 的 s-詞幹形式。與原始凱爾特語 *temeslos (「黑暗」)、*temos (「黑暗的」)有關。原始凱爾特語中「黑暗(的)」比喻作「水」的現象也見於原始凱爾特語 *dubros (「水;黑暗的」),源自原始印歐語 *dʰubrós (「黑暗的」),其也是威爾士語 dŵr (「水」)、愛爾蘭語 dobhar (「水,海;黑暗的,陰暗的」)的源頭。類似的水體名稱也見於歐洲其他地方,如葡萄牙的杜羅河(Douro)。
亦有可能源自原始凱爾特語 *tā-[4]、*tāyo- (「融化;流動」),源自原始印歐語 *teh₂- (「融化」),或源自一未知的印歐語詞根[5][6]。
