源自中古英语 throng、thrang，源自古英语 þrang、ġeþrang (“挤压，人群，吵嚷”)，源自原始日耳曼语 *þrangwą、*þrangwō (“人群”)，源自*þrangwaz (“挤压”)，源自原始印欧语 *trenkʷ- (“殴打，击打；砍劈；按压”)。与荷兰语 drang、德语 Drang同源。亦对比德语 Gedränge (“人群”)。
